Sunoco (SUN) is looking vulnerable. The stock has broken through the bottom of its rising channel and is breaking down under support at $60.00. SUN may still have additional support at its 40 & 50-dma's.

  James Brown   3/16/200,  3:19:31 PM
If you haven't heard yet MGM is considering a one-time dividend payout of $6 to $9 per share. That's a HUGE yield on a $17.50 stock. Shares are up 8.8% today on the news.

  James Brown   3/16/200,  3:14:18 PM
Copper futures are up again following yesterday's big gain. Meanwhile shares of Phelps Dodge (PD) are still coiling near support at $80.00 and its 50-dma. Aggressive trades could buy it here with a tight stop or look for a move over $81.75, which seems to be minor resistance.

Best Buy Co (BBY) is still consolidating its recent breakdown under $50.00 and its 200-dma but the trend is lower with a nice short-term trend of lower highs. This looks like a bearish candidate if you missed the original breakdown. However, watch out for BBY's earnings report on March 31st.

The rally is definitely fading in shares of Kohl's (KSS). The company announced earnings in late February but the post-earnings rush has faded and KSS has now failed twice under its 200-dma and the breakdown under $50.00 looks pretty bearish. There may be some support at its simple 50-dma but the stock looks like a short candidate.

  James Brown   3/16/200,  2:47:30 PM
The recent bounce is Dow component Caterpillar (CAT) is starting to look like a failed rally with today's roll over under the $76 level, which was previous support for most of February.

  Jeff Bailey   3/16/200,  2:45:18 PM
S&P Banks Index (BIX.X) 347.74 +0.37% ... afternoon low here. No sign of strength that I can find at this point.

  James Brown   3/16/200,  2:37:54 PM
The biotech sector (BTK.X) is certainly not seeing any bounce today either. Today's drop confirms yesterday's breakdown under the 50-dma. The biggest component in the BTK is AMGN, which broke the $60.00 mark yesterday and continues to fall today.

  Jeff Bailey   3/16/200,  2:37:45 PM
Interest sensitive ... S&P Banks Index (BIX.X) 349.03 +0.74% ... best level of the session came at DAILY R1 of 349.41, when BIX.X traded a session high of 349.43. Move above 350 might get some bullish attention as to a market read on the FOMC.

  James Brown   3/16/200,  2:30:23 PM
Bulls may want to keep an eye on insurance giant AIG. The recent decline has stalled at the $70 level of support and shares are bouncing. Short-term oscillators like the RSI and Stochastics are turning bullish. A move back over its 50-dma and traders could target the highs near $75-76.

Fed policy announcement

The Committee continues to believe that an accommodative stance of monetary policy, coupled with robust underlying growth in productivity, is providing important ongoing support to economic activity. The evidence accumulated over the intermeeting period indicates that output is continuing to expand at a solid pace. Although job losses have slowed, new hiring has lagged. Increases in core consumer prices are muted and expected to remain low.

The Committee perceives the upside and downside risks to the attainment of sustainable growth for the next few quarters are roughly equal. The probability of an unwelcome fall in inflation has diminished in recent months and now appears almost equal to that of a rise in inflation. With inflation quite low and resource use slack, the Committee believes that it can be patient in removing its policy accommodation.

Bull? Are you a bull by hope or being a cheerleader today? I don't see a bull in the market!! Guess we'll know in a little while. Suzanne

My bias is that we are very oversold and the Dow/Nasdaq are resisting any further drops to near the support at 10000/1900. This is the place where we could bounce if the Fed announcement is the least bit positive. Not trying to project a bias but I do believe we are oversold.

  Jim Brown   3/16/200,  1:40:26 PM
Hi Jim; The only reason I can see for today's positive bias is the extreme oversold condition of the markets plus the triple witching but NOT the fed meeting!!

The BEST the FED can do is leave everything the same which is already known. The risk is downhill from there!!

The Economist had 2 articles calling for higher US interest rates, plus Stephen Roach's open letter 2 weeks ago calling for the same etc...

Today's trading should NOT be based on the FED meeting at all!!. In fact I am thinking of shorting any after FED announcement rally - Jamil

I have no problem with shorting after the announcement if the market is moving down. I have no problem with anything you said. I am only saying that the historical bias for Fed announcements is a market uptick prior to the announcement. Whether it is short covering or bargain hunting I do not know. It just normally happens.

I agree the Fed can do nothing EXCEPT say something bullish about the economy and that they are on hold for the foreseeable future. Since most traders think the Fed's next move will be up, any confirmation of no impending move is still bullish. Considering the state of the market any comments that can be interpreted as bullish could help stimulate the market. I guarantee that there are traders today that are fearing a statement that could be construed as a potential rate hike ahead. This uncertainty always sours the markets. Once the meeting is over and that uncertainty has passed we will see what real sentiment appears.

Lehman Brothers (LEH) announced earnings this morning. Estimates were for $1.66 a share. The company turned in $2.21 per share. Q1 revenues soared +84% to $3.14billion. Despite the earnings blow out the stock's early morning strength is fading and shares have pulled back to fill the morning gap higher. Currently LEH is trying to hold the $85.00 level.

The stock surged yesterday on three times the average volume and we're seeing some follow through today. Boosting shares up 3.39% this morning is an upgrade to "strong buy" by Raymond James. The move over $7.30 is a 2 1/2 year high.
