Treasury and 30-year bond ... DJ - The U.S. Treasury Department Friday asked bond dealers for input on the size of the 30-year bond offering it will announce Feb. 1 and reaffirmed plans to sell a total of $20 billion to $30 billion in 30-year bonds each year.

"Please elaborate on the factors that influenced your estimate of the appropriate size of the 30-year bond offering and describe market conditions in the long-end of the market," Treasury asked in its agenda for meetings with 11 of the 22 primary dealers slated for next week ahead of the Feb. 1 quarterly refunding.

Treasury in August 2005 announced that it was reviving the 30-year bond, which it had stopped selling in October 2001. Treasury in November 2005 said it planned to sell a new 30-year bond in February and reopen it in August.

Treasury reaffirmed its plan to sell 30-year bonds twice a year in February in August, but asked bond dealers if this auction calendar made sense. Treasury asked dealers if it should consider selling 30-year bonds possibly in May and November in future years.

A senior Treasury official Friday reiterated that Treasury still plans to sell a total of $20 billion to $30 billion in 30-year bonds each year.

Treasury posted the February discussion agenda on its Web site so it can get feedback from a wide range of market participants, not just those it is meeting with this quarter, and asked comments to be submitted by Wednesday.

Iran ... DJ - The U.S. warned Friday that Iran risked further isolation after its central bank governor reportedly said the country would move its foreign exchange reserves out of European banks as a protection against any possible U.N. sanctions over its nuclear program.

"I think it is an indication that Iran is further isolating itself from the rest of the world," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said, according to the transcript of a regular news briefing. "I don't know what it is that they hope to accomplish by doing this."

According to analysts' estimates, the transfer of Iranian foreign currency reserves out of Europe could affect as much as $50 billion in deposits.

OEX headed down toward Keltner support now at 578.98, but there's also gap support through here from the gap down on Wednesday. Know how you'll handle a potential bounce, if one should occur. Support below that at 576.44 on the 15-minute chart. Resistance still looking firm just above 581.

Got to go.

Jeff Bailey : 1/20/2006 9:57:26 AM

University of Michigan Mid-January Sentiment 93.4 vs. December's 91.5.

Linda Piazza : 1/20/2006 9:51:38 AM

Hey, Mark. I'm out here monitoring things for a moment before I have to head off again. Here's what I see on the OEX, with the caveat that this is opex Friday and you know how well setups "don't" work out on opex Friday. The advdec line tried to punch higher, but is now clinging to midline Keltner support, threatening to break below it. That's at about 30, with the QCharts advdec line level at 18 as I type. On its 15-minute chart, the OEX is just below massed resistance from 581-581.97 and looks vulnerable to 579.08. Looks and is are different beasts on opex Friday. I'd look for at least temporary support there or maybe a little above that unless there's just a gully washer down through that support, but the resistance from 581-582 so far looks strong enough to hold the OEX back. I've been watching strange things happen lately, though, and if there's still that strange underpinning to the markets, then the bearish evidence matters not at all.

Jeff Bailey : 1/20/2006 9:51:11 AM

Citigroup (C) $47.02 -1.93% Link ... Nations largest financial institution and Dow component said net income totaled $6.93 billion, or $1.37 per share, in the October-December period, up from $5.32 billion, or $1.02 a share, a year earlier.

Revenue totaled $20.78 billion for the latest quarter, up 3% from $20.1 billion a year earlier.

Wall Street expectations were for profits of $1.00 a share on revenue of $21.6 billion.
