Dateline WSJ Citigroup Inc. said Monday that its first-quarter net income rose 3.6% on strong results in its investment-banking and brokerage operations, offsetting a revenue decline in its retail consumer division.

The New York financial-services firm, the largest in terms of market capitalization, earned $5.64 billion, or $1.12 a share, versus $5.44 billion, or $1.04 a share, in last year's first quarter. Revenue rose 4.7% to $22.18 billion from $21.2 billion.

The results included $846 million of pretax compensation expense related to stock grants to retirement-eligible employees, and a $657 million tax benefit related to the resolution of a federal tax audit. After taxes, the charges totaled $520 million.

Citigroup's per-share earnings bested analyst expectations, as the consensus estimate was for earnings of $1.02 cents a share, according to Thomson First Call. However, revenue fell short of the $23.2 billion-estimate.
