Palestinian Security Forces Set Fire To Cabinet Building (Ramallah, West Bank)

AP- Hundreds of Palestinian security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas went on a violent rampage against the Hamas-led government Monday night, riddling the parliament and Cabinet buildings with bullets to protest an attack against their comrades in the Gaza Strip by Hamas gunmen. The mob set fire to one of the Cabinet buildings, causing heavy damage as flames quickly spread.

The security men shot out the windows of the parliament before storming the two-building Cabinet complex, where they smashed furniture, destroyed computers and scattered documents.

No casualties were reported.

"Every time they touch one of ours in Gaza, we will get ten of theirs in the West Bank," said one member of the Preventive Security force, which is loyal to Abbas' Fatah movement. Dozens of gunmen from the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a pro-Fatah militia, joined the security men.

The rampage followed an attack in Gaza early Monday by Hamas gunmen on a Preventive Security installation. The attack set off daylong clashes that left two people dead and 14 wounded.

Abbas has been locked in a bitter power struggle with Hamas since the Islamic group beat Fatah in legislative elections. Hamas now controls the parliament and Cabinet.

The power struggle has revolved around control of security forces. With most forces loyal to Abbas, Hamas has deployed its own private militia in the Gaza Strip, raising tensions between the sides.

Abbas was in Gaza at the time of the rampage, where he has been holding negotiations with Hamas in hopes of ending the political deadlock.

May PPI Seen +0.4%; Core +0.2% (CNBC Survey)

DJ- The producer price index is expected to be boosted by energy prices in May.

The median estimate of 19 economists surveyed over the weekend by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC is for a 0.4% overall PPI increase last month after a 0.9% rise in April.

However, economists see the nonfood, non-energy core to have increased a more restrained 0.2%, compared with a 0.1% in April.

The Labor Department is due to release the May PPI report at 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 GMT) on Tuesday.

"Energy prices could boost headline PPI by 0.4% as gasoline and oil prices rose on average," said Ian Morris, chief economist at HSBC Securities in New York. "The core PPI might rise 0.2% after two months at 0.1%."

This week's wholesale and consumer price index data would be the last major inflation gauges before the Federal Open Market Committee on June 28-29. It comes as Fed policy-makers have expressed concerns about an uptick in core consumer price pressures.

May Retail Sales Seen Flat (CNBC Survey)

DJ- The retail sales report for May is expected to show a falloff in demand in line with the slowdown the Federal Reserve has been looking for.

The median estimate of 20 economists surveyed over the weekend by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC is for there to be no change in total retail sales in May following a 0.5% increase in April. Excluding autos, economists look for a 0.5% increase following a 0.7% gain in April.

The Commerce Department is due to release the May retail sales report at 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 GMT) on Tuesday.

"The poor showing by auto sales will negate the 4.8% positive growth rate for same store sales in May, resulting in a net negative effect on retail sales for the month," said Elizabeth Casinelli, an economist at Moody's Investors Service in New York.

"Look for a decline of roughly 0.1%. Spending on gasoline is a primary driver of the expected 0.3% increase for May retail sales excluding autos," she said.

Dateline WSJ Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. said net income rose 47% on record revenue in capital markets and another strong quarter in investment banking.

The New York financial-services firm said net income was $1.00 billion, or $1.69 a share for the period ended May 31, compared with $683 million in net income for the year-ago period, when it earned $1.13 a share, which is adjusted to reflect a two-for-one stock split on April 28.

Revenue rose to $4.41 billion, compared with $3.28 billion at this time a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting per-share earnings of $1.63 on revenue of $4.22 billion.

"Our strong results for the second quarter continue to demonstrate that Lehman Brothers has the breadth, balance and scale necessary to help our clients around the world take advantage of opportunities in a changing and challenging market environment," said Richard S. Fuld, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer.
