DJ - Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (APC) after Wednesday's closing bell said it plans to sell its Canadian unit as part of a refocusing effort related to its agreement to acquire Kerr-McGee Corp. (KMG) and Western Gas Resources Inc. (WGR) for $21 billion.

Anadarko said multiple parties are interested in buying the unit.

The sale's proceeds would be used to retire debt associated with the Kerr-McGee and Western Gas acquisitions.

Google Setting Up Operations In the Middle East

DJ - Google Inc. (GOOG) $405.70 +0.83% Link is setting up operations in Cairo, which will be the Internet giant's hub for the Arabic-speaking Middle East and helpmate in setting strategy for serving and expanding the market.

The Cairo office's mission is to lay the ground work for the future: to advise on Arabic product development, find ways to increase Arabic content on the Internet and boost high-speed Internet access adoption in the area.

Google chose Egypt as its first outpost in the Arab world because it's the most populous country in the region, with 78 million people and 5.2 million Internet users. Today, the Cairo office is a home office for one, headed by Sherif R. Iskander, a computer engineer who joined Google at the beginning of this year and previously led Egypt and Levant operations for EMC Corp. (EMC) and Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW). He is now looking for office space and to two product-marketing managers.

The region, which stretches from Morocco to the Levant to the Gulf, is home to some 300 million people, of which about 23 million have Internet access today, about the same number as Italy. While income disparities are extreme in this region, which is characterized by both poverty and oil wealth, broadband prices have been falling and are now typically affordable for the middle class. Google estimates 50 million people in the region will be online by 2009.

The potential market is large when you look at it as a region tied together by Arabic, the sixth most-used language in the world, Iskander says. Indeed, the market includes about 25 million Arab ex-patriots who live mainly in North America, South America and Australia.

While Internet penetration is low in the Middle East, heavy media consumption and its large population of young people present opportunities, he says. "It is in many ways a virgin market. There is a lot of room for growth."

Argentina Central Bank Halts Peso Slide; Bond Recover

DJ - The Argentine peso recovered slightly Wednesday as the central bank sold dollars early to halt a three-session slide that had pushed the peso to a three-year-low against the dollar.

Meanwhile, locally traded bonds rebounded, although volumes remained depressed as investors await the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest interest rate decision on Thursday

The peso closed at ARS3.0900 against the dollar, slightly stronger than Tuesday's close at ARS3.0925.

"It appears that the central bank sold dollars early, setting a floor for the peso," said Gustavo Quintana, a trader with local Lopez Leon Brokers.

The peso on Tuesday inched to its weakest point since March 2003 as the central bank bought $24.5 million in the open market. Official data on Wednesday's intervention will be available later in the day.

Volumes were down by some $100 million on the day to around $230 million, Quintana said.

The peso's three-year low has raised little concern as most analysts continue to believe that the local currency would quickly gain on the dollar if the central bank stopped buying dollars.

The central bank has been habitually buying dollars over the past several years to build reserves and maintain a weaker peso that benefits Argentine exporters.

In the local bond market, prices were rebounding after suffering sharp losses on Tuesday. Among gainers, the restructured Discount bond in pesos was recently quoted at ARS112.50, up from ARS111.80, while the Par in pesos was at ARS43.25, up from ARS42.80.

"There was very little activity," said one trader. "It's expected that the Fed will raise interest rates. What investors are waiting for is the wording of the comment."

One more thing on the INTC Chart, the gold 50EMA seems to be resistance and has not been able to close above the MA since May 8th.

Jane Fox : 6/28/2006 1:26:05 PM

INTC may be the DOW leader today but this chart is not bullish - yet but it also has potential. On the bullish side I see a reverse H&S forming, the 20EMA (magenta) has proven to be support and the jtHMA is green.

On the bears side I think the weakness in the whole market is of utmost importance. Technically I see that this market has not even retraced to the 38.2% fib level, has not even challenged the downward trendline from January and it has a lot of resistance to burn through. I just don't think it will make it. Link

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of J. Crew Group Inc., the New York-based preppy clothing retailer, took off in their trading debut Wednesday morning, pleasing investors who participated in the initial public offering.

J. Crew shares, which trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "JCG," opened at $25.01 per share, with 6.345 million shares traded. That was up 25 percent from the offering price of $20 set late Tuesday.

In an earlier regulatory filing, J. Crew said it had expected to sell the 18.8 million shares at an estimated range of $15 to $17 each. With the strong price, the company will receive net proceeds of $351.6 million and will use the money to redeem its preferred stock. It's the biggest retail IPO, excluding restaurants, in several years.

The timing of the public offering of J. Crew isn't exactly the best given worries about a consumer spending slowdown. But it appears that investors are focusing on one tangible amid the uncertainty: Millard Drexler, the company's CEO, known as the fashion industry's merchant guru.

Good Morning All. The Fed begins a two-day meeting today to decide whether to boost the target on the fed-funds rate for the 17th straight time. Policy makers are widely expected to raise the rate by a quarter-percentage point to 5.25% and will issue their decision on Thursday. Some market watchers have even speculated that rate setters may opt for a half-point increase to squash inflation.
