Japan's Tanigaki: Zero Rates Desirable As Inflation Risk Low

DJ- Japanese Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki said Tuesday that the nation's central bank should keep interest rates near zero as Japan is faced with little inflation risk.

"Given that there's little concern about inflation, I think zero interest rates are desirable" for the country's economy, Tanigaki told a news conference after a regular cabinet ministers meeting.

He also said the central bank needs to support the economy through monetary policy to make Japan's economic growth "sustainable" while inflation concerns are low.

Tanigaki's remarks may underscore the ministry's worries that any rate hikes by the central bank could make it more difficult to restore the nation's tattered finances by causing long-term rates and debt-financing costs to increase.

The BOJ is widely expected to raise interest rates to 0.25% on Friday after years of anchoring them near zero to revive the country's economy. A rate announcement will come after the bank wraps up its two-day policy meeting that day.

The finance minister also urged central bankers to monitor the economy and markets carefully in determining the course of monetary policy.

"I want the BOJ to make a judgment after carefully examining economic and market developments," Tanigaki said.

The central bank should also watch long-term interest rate movements and exercise caution in deciding on what to do with its monthly purchases of government bonds worth Y1.2 trillion, he said.

"We're keenly watching movements in interest rates," Tanigaki said. "We hope (the BOJ) will examine them sufficiently and make a decision."

While the finance minister has been calling for a continued zero-rate policy, however, analysts expect that the BOJ will go ahead with a rate hike Friday as an increasing number of other government and ruling party officials have signaled tolerance for such a move amid Japan's steady economic recovery.

On Monday, a senior ruling party official said Japan should trust its central bank with monetary policy decisions.

"We should trust the Bank of Japan and leave (the decision) up to them," Tsutomu Takebe, secretary-general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said at a roundtable discussion in Tokyo, Kyodo News agency reported.

Today's Activity

Swing trade shorted 1/2 position in shares of Newmont Mining (NEM) at the bid of $54.19. Stop currently $55.50. Targeting $52.25.

Swing trade raised bullish stop on the 3/4 bullish Altria (MO) position to $77.10.

May not need to be this "defensive" with MO, with other bearish trades currently OPEN, but cognizant if COMPX breaks to new lows, then bids could get pulled in rather lackluster volumes.

US 6-Month Bills: 5.105%; 68.24% At High

DJ- The U.S. Treasury awarded $14.00 billion in six-month bills at Monday's auction at a high rate of 5.105%.

The Treasury received bids totaling $31.61 billion and accepted $14.00 billion, including $2.02 billion of noncompetitive tenders. The dollar price was 97.419139 and the investment rate, or bond-equivalent return, was 5.313%.

The Treasury also sold $507.00 million of six-month bills to foreign and international monetary authority accounts on a noncompetitive bidding basis.

The bid-to-cover ratio, an indication of demand, was 2.44, Treasury said.

Tenders submitted at the high yield were allotted 68.24%.

The median rate was 5.100%; that is, 50% of the amount of accepted competitive bids were tendered at or below that rate.

Of the competitive bids accepted, 5% were tendered at or below the rate of 5.085%.

Jane Fox : 7/10/2006 1:38:46 PM

Jeff I think you mean 6 contracts and not 60. :)

Jeff Bailey : 7/10/2006 1:41:32 PM

Educational A trader that would normally buy, say... 60 contracts of NVDA (call/put) or any other stock for that matter, is "saying" they would normally buy/sell at least 6000 shares of the underlying stock.

Of course, this assumes some type of risk management for the trader's/investor's account.

6000 x 19.65 = $117,900.00

Trade size of this probably equates to a trader's account of $1,000,000.00 or more.

Jeff Bailey : 7/10/2006 1:30:49 PM

The UVA-TD long put position would represent roughly 1/3 bearish.

If $10,000.00 of capital short in the stock is FULL position, then at PROFILED stock price of $19.65, a trader/investor using RISK MANAGEMENT would divide $10,000 by $19.65 to derive a 508 share short position in the underlying stock.

For the OPTIONS, where 1 contract= 100 shares, this would equate to 5 contracts= Full.

It's hard picking lows on these stocks, they are so volatile. The orders for video cards and ram will start pouring in eventually. The one concern has been the ramp up in inventory ahead of it, so this is why we are seeing weakness. But at some point, it gets priced in.

Marc, I saw your NVDA post from a couple of weeks ago, thus I've been following developments in semiconcutors, software and networkers closely.

I agree with the Vista scenario, this the importance of its push-out as well as new Windows delay.

Marc Eckelberry : 7/10/2006 11:55:42 AM

Vista will be a memory hog and very, very graphics intensive. Tech bears have forgotten what a major OS upgrade does to the industry. That's ok, now is the time to start working it. Evryone will get hip to it in a few months, if not before.

Marc Eckelberry : 7/10/2006 11:53:20 AM

I like NVDA, ATYT and MU as pure Windows Vista plays. INTC goes without saying, but these other guys can jump 50% in a year. NVDA could double by next summer.

Marc Eckelberry : 7/10/2006 11:52:14 AM

Jeff, I had not even seen your post. But NVDA has been on my radar for weeks. I get 50% 2004/2006 at 18.31, and that is where I would scale in.

Marc Eckelberry : 7/10/2006 11:49:52 AM

NVDA is a stock that is reaching a point where long term investors might want to start nibbling. This is a solid play for 2007. Vista will be very graphic intensive and they will need big video cards. I would start buying on any hit of 18.32 that holds.

Jane Fox : 7/10/2006 11:17:59 AM

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Inventories at U.S. wholesalers rose 0.8% in May while sales increased 1.6%, the Commerce Department said Monday.

The inventory-to-sales ratio fell to a record-low 1.15 in May. The typical wholesaler has about 35 days of sales on hand. The increase in inventories was slightly higher than the 0.6% predicted by economists surveyed by MarketWatch.

Inventories had increased a revised 1.3% in April, up from 0.9% originally estimated. Inventories are up 7.8% in the past year. Sales are up 12.1% in the past year.

The wholesale inventory report rarely affects financial markets. It is of interest primarily to economists tweaking their estimates for gross domestic product. The Commerce Department will finalize its estimates for business sales and inventories on Friday with the release of the retail inventory data.

Wholesalers are middlemen between retailers and producers. They serve as absorbers for supply and demand shocks. Trends in wholesale trade are not considered leading indicators.

The company cited its decision to reduce wholesaler inventory by shipping product volumes that were below its estimated prescription demand and lower product orders from an international distributor for the shortfall. Connetics also withdrew its outlook for fiscal 2006, and said it's largely completed internal work on the expected restatement of its accounting for rebate reserves. It's also evaluating and resolving other items in addition to the rebate reserves that could materially impact both the restated periods and its results for the first quarter.

Dateline WSJ MOSCOW -- Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, the purported author of modern Russia's worst terrorist attacks, has been killed, the head of the Federal Security Service said Monday.

FSB head Nikolai Patrushev told President Vladimir Putin that Mr. Basayev had been killed overnight in Ingushetia, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Mr. Basayev, 41 years old, claimed responsibility for some of Russia's worst terror attacks, including the seizure of some 800 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002, the 2004 school hostage taking in Beslan that killed 331, and the seizure of about 1,000 hostages at a hospital in Budyonnovsk that killed about 100.

Mr. Patrushev told Mr. Putin that the Chechen rebels had hoped to "put political pressure on the Russian leadership" during the Group of Eight summit later this week, which Mr. Putin is chairing.

Mr. Putin called Mr. Basayev's killing "deserved retribution" for terrorist attacks in Beslan and Budyonnovsk, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.

I have gotten emails from readers asking me to post on the options side and I am torn because I use the futures markets for the basis of my market analysis and as an extention to that have posted my internals analysis on the futures side as well. I don't want to confuse readers by switching but I want all to be able to take advantage of posts on the futures side. So to all readers who do not look at the futures side of the monitor, please do so to first of all see how the equity markets and a few select commodity markets traded overnight. Then intraday get a really good feel for the cash markets with the analysis you read on futures markets.
