Bullish Close
by Jim Brown

The markets closed at the high of the day, the day after a
big gain and in front of a weekend. The Dow recovered all
of its losses for the week and gained ground for the second
consecutive week. The Nasdaq recovered 54 of the 57 points
lost the prior week. It was a bullish close on the surface
but the internals painted a slightly less bullish picture.

The only economic report on Friday was a bullish blowout
with Durable Goods soaring +3.4% in March. This was a major
win for the bulls with the headline number seven times the
consensus estimate of only +0.5%. Not only was March a
strong jump but February was revised up to +3.8% from +2.5%.
The only component losing ground was communications equipment
and that is no surprise to anyone. That component tends to
be highly volatile with monthly swings from +46% to -64% in
just the last five months. Headline orders hit their high
for the year and completely erases any fears that economic
growth may have peaked earlier in the quarter. Demand is
now growing at better than a +10% pace over the year earlier
period. Considering the good March number and the revision
to February this was a very strong report.

The strong Durable Goods rekindled the rumors that we could
see a rate hike in May and bonds sold off once again. The
dollar rose on the economic strength and will eventually
put more pressure on earnings for international companies.

The Fed mounted a solid front with multiple comments from
different Fed heads. Moskow said "it is a question of timing
as to when rates will actually rise". He added that the Fed
has the luxury of being more accommodative in contrast to
previous cycles. Analysts were quick to compare 2004 with
1994 when the Fed raised too quickly and tanked the bond
market. Broaddus also made similar comments suggesting the
Fed was not unduly concerned with inflation. He commented
that jobs were likely holding onto gains and suggested we
would see more gains in the May Jobs report. Broaddus also
said he did not expect strong growth the remainder of the
year but gains in the stock market would help spending.
Fed Vice-Chairman Roger Ferguson said the deficit was not
as troublesome as some recent news articles have suggested.
This was in advance of the G7 meeting and he said the
prospects for the U.S. economy as a result of the deficit
were "not as apocalyptic as the ones you imagine." All of
the commentators echoed the "disinflation risk has passed"
refrain.

Bernanke was the most constrained of the multiple speakers
saying that labor market slack and high productivity growth
would restrain inflation. He said he still felt the recovery
was tentative. "Although the labor market appears to be
sitting up and taking fluids, it has not hopped out of bed
and begun a round of jumping jacks." Bernanke also repeated
the "timing of rate hikes are dependent on the speed of the
recovery" mantra. It almost appears the Fed is not planning
on raising but are planning on a constant verbal onslaught
to make us think they are. If they warn enough they hope
the shock of the actual hike will be minimal because the
market will have already priced it in.

It all boils down to whom do traders believe. Are they going
to believe the Fed has the luxury of waiting or will they
lean in the direction of hike first wait later. I mentioned
on Thursday that Wayne Angel was talking about a 50 point
hike in May. While I don't think there is anybody who
believes that is possible the cloud remains. The May Fed
meeting is only six trading days away and the chance for
a blowout rally before that meeting is slim. Institutions
will want to be cautious just in case.

The fund flows for the week came in at +$3.3B and marked
a strong pattern change for a post tax week. One reader
said a Schwab representative had commented about the strong
cash inflows into brokerage accounts over the last couple
weeks. I am beginning to believe that not only have the
planets aligned in the bulls favor but they have been
super glued in place.

Microsoft gapped open to $27.50 on their strong earning
Thursday night and held that level all day. Bill Gates was
rewarded with a nearly $2B increase in his net worth based
on the number of shares he is currently holding. Not a bad
days work. The real key is what next? Will it continue to
hold this level or shrink back to the $25.50 range it has
traded for the last month? I would be thrilled to see it
fill the gap back to $25.50 so I can buy some. I think the
bad news is mostly over for Microsoft and they will make a
big announcement before the July analyst meeting. It could
be a very large one time dividend or just a highly increased
dividend rate. Either way shareholders should reap a large
benefit. I am betting against any material acquisitions due
to the continued antitrust concerns. Symantec would be the
only high visibility takeover target on my list. They could
buy SYMC and have $40 billion left over and they need a
quality virus solution.

Microsoft may be about to get another windfall from an
unlikely source. Google is expected to announce its long
awaited IPO next Thursday and rumor has it that Microsoft
has been a long time investor in Google. The IPO is expected
to raise over $20 billion and would immediately push
Google ahead of Amazon in market cap. It will also be a
windfall for the two 30 yr old founders of the company.
No financial info is known about Google but analysts now
guess revenue is nearing $1 billion a year. You can see
why YHOO and AMZN are jumping into the search engine
business.

Amazon did not jump into anything except trouble with its
earnings report on Thursday night. The stock sold off on
Friday to the tune of -2.57 but don't fret over the current
holders. That is still above its Wednesday's close. I am
a diehard Amazonian and while I think the concept will
continue to improve I would hesitate to jump into the
stock at this level.

EBAY, the ranking Internet gorilla, gained +8 on Thursday
to a new all time high of $83. It managed to hold most of
that on Friday with a close just over $82. I am also an
avid EBAY trader and while I may not agree with Meg Witman's
estimate of a $1.5 trillion potential market I do think EBAY
will continue to grow. They will see $32 billion in sales
this year according to Meg. I alerted readers to a potential
EBAY entry point back on March 23rd when it touched $65.
I am going to reverse that today with a put recommendation
in my Editors Play. Not because I don't like EBAY but I
think the coming Google IPO could dampen demand for the
current leaders.

Friday was far from a strong day in the markets with the
Dow negative for most of the day. It returned to positive
only in the last 90 min of trading. It only gained +11.64
and MSFT accounted for the majority of that gain. For the
majority of the day the A/D line was negative by nearly
-2000 issues. In the end the Dow did manage to climb ever
closer to the 10500-10550 resistance level. The working
range for April has been 10300-10550 and we are very near
the top of that range.

The Nasdaq rebounded from the drop to 1973 on Wednesday
and traded nearly +75 points above that low at Friday's
close. Tech earnings have been mostly outstanding with
only a few company specific problems. The Nasdaq is also
closing in on the top of its range at 2075.

The index that could cause the most trouble at the open
on Monday is the NDX. It closed at 1496 on Friday with
strong resistance at 1500. A break over 1500 at the open
could set the stage for a decent day but it is strong
resistance.

I was encouraged by the positive close even though the
actual points gained for the day were light. Remember we
had a banner point day on Thursday and following it with
another gain in front of a weekend shows strong underlying
sentiment. I already mentioned the internals were negative
but not enough to keep the indexes from closing positive.
I think this is bullish for Monday and could provide a
strong start for the week.

Earnings have been nothing short of spectacular. According
to First Call 50% of the S&P have reported and 78% beat
estimates, 11% announced inline and 11% missed estimates.
Historically about 58% beat and 20% miss. The Q1 earnings
growth is currently +26% and well over the prior analyst
forecasts. Some analysts suggest the strong surprise is
due to the new financial regulations leading to very
conservative guidance.

Whatever the reason the fact remains that this will be the
strongest quarter of the year. Analysts are raising their
estimates for the rest of the year but they are still in
the low to mid teens. Next year by most accounts is still
expected to be even slower. One way of judging market
direction is by the measurement of small cap earnings
growth. For all of 2004 growth is projected to be 44%.
This drops down to only 14% for all of 2005. Is this
reality or is it the "conservative" viewpoint?

The bottom line is an economy that appears to be suddenly
booming and earnings growth for the first quarter could be
a record. This presents a quandary for investors. Do they
believe the forecasts for slowing earnings growth or the
signs the economy is starting to explode? Are these two
events mutually exclusive or will a potential exploding
economy explode the earnings as well?

This is the decision traders will face next week. Do they
turn cautious with only six days until the Fed meeting or
do they roll the dice and bet against the Fed and buy
stocks. The sell in May and go away crowd must be going
crazy. Had they done that last year they would have lost
out on a strong bull market. Will they miss out on the
same thing this year or does lightning really strike twice.

Last year April 22nd was the breakout day on the Nasdaq
and April 28th on the Dow. We all know what happened and
that memory has got to be weighing on traders consciousness.
They have been told time and again that this is the peak
quarter but memories of past bull markets die hard. Do
analysts really know what is ahead? Just a few weeks ago
First Call was predicting earnings growth for Q1 at 15.9%
with the potential to hit 20%. If they are wrong about the
future quarters then stocks could actually be undervalued.

You know I am just posing those questions for debate today
but I am getting the feeling that investors may not be
willing to give up without a fight. They may be just
stubborn enough to hold on to stocks while hoping for a
repeat of 2003. The next two weeks are going to be crucial
to the markets. Beginning next Thursday we will have seven
days of critical economic reports with a Fed meeting right
in the middle. GDP, ISM, PMI, Factory Orders, Productivity
and Jobs. The question we face is do we want strong economic
growth and the risk of an early rate hike or weak growth
and the risk of lower earnings. I personally will take two
helpings of very strong growth with extra gravy please.
We are going to have the rate hikes eventually so let's
get this ball rolling and tell the earnings analysts get
out their erasers.

Obviously what we think or what we want is immaterial but
how to play it is not. Despite the rebound for the week
we are still range bound. That means as traders we sell
the tops and buy the bottoms until a breakout or breakdown
appears. A breakout for me would be defined as a Nasdaq
over 2150 and the Dow over 10750. Obviously that would be
the extremes and I would start getting excited with a move
over 2100/10550. The real clue would be a Russell over 605.
If fund managers are buying small caps then the stage is
set. A breakdown for me would be a failure of the lows for
the week at 1975/10250. With all the major economic news
ahead, the Fed meeting and 26% of the S&P reporting earnings
over the next week we could see a lot of volatility. Until
we get a breakout or breakdown continue to buy the bottoms
and sell the tops and avoid trading in the middle.

Investor Bravado?
- J. Brown

The volatility indices are supposed to measure investor optimism
and/or fear. Lower numbers on the VIX/VXO mean less fear/more
confidence for investors. A quick glance at Friday's readings at
or near new multi-year lows would indicate investors are feeling
pretty confident right now. But are they? With volatility
indices near new lows why aren't the markets at or near new
highs? Earnings certainly aren't the issue. Earnings have been
great. On average they have come in well above expectations. Of
course Jim has mentioned multiple times that year over year
comparisons start to get a lot tougher going forward as companies
compete with the very strong second half to 2003. That leaves us
with interest rate fears, geo-political tensions and Iraq, and
the Presidential election.

Fortunately, Greenspan appears to have soothed the rate hike
fears at least for now. The Iraq question is still up for grabs
and that will have a direct influence on Bush's re-election
campaign. We don't want to be political here but it is widely
assumed that the markets want or are expected to do better with a
Republican in the White House. However, unless things really
begin to melt down in Iraq next week this probably won't be a
short-term issue. This probably means that the rate fears will
quietly loom in the background as the markets digest two big
weeks of economic reports.

Looking at some of the major sector indices I noticed the
following. The Dow Transports index has broken out above
resistance at 3000. Traditional Dow theory suggests that you
can't have an extended rally/bull market without participation
from the Transports so this is good news. Glancing through some
of the tech sectors I noticed that the semiconductors are
rebounding again. Fortunately, this short-term bottom also
appears to be a "higher low" on its daily chart. Not quite doing
so well are the hardware stocks. The GHA is stumbling along
support and not showing much of a bounce on Thursday-Friday.

Traders may also want to look through the Defense, Retail and
Cyclical sectors for bullish plays. Defense and Retail are at
new closing all-time highs while Cyclicals are also doing pretty
well.

On a side note check out the gold futures versus the dollar. The
dollar has risen strongly in the past couple of weeks but the
rally paused at resistance of its 200-dma. In reverse gold
futures have fallen strongly but are holding support near their
200-dma. Both of these look ready to consolidate their recent
moves.

WATCH LIST
==================================================================

The PremierInvestor.net watch list is not designed to be read
as full fledged stock picks. Rather we would prefer to offer
it as an extra tool in today's investor toolbox. Think of it
as a radar screen with your own radar operator pointing out
interesting developments, technical patterns or potential plays
that you may or may not have seen on your own. Due to time
constraints we do glance at the news but rarely do we have
time to fully read pertinent news stories, due background
research and other necessary screens that investors should do
before making a decision. A common exercise is to read the
entry, glance at the sector and other stocks in that industry
and then compare what's happening in the stock to what's
happening in the broader market indices. We hope you enjoy
the Watch List and that it proves to be a useful tool for your
own trading success.

STOCKS WORTH WATCHING
---------------------------------

G A T X Corp - GMT - close: 24.28 change: +0.58

WHAT TO WATCH: Friday's rally over resistance at $24.00 looks
like a delayed reaction to GMT's earnings that came out on
Thursday morning. Net profits jumped from 4 cents a year ago to
46 cents this past quarter. Sounds like a pretty good quarter.
More aggressive traders can look for positions now but GMT
appears to have more resistance at its 100-dma (24.50) and again
at $25.00.

---

Tellabs Inc - TLAB - close: 9.84 change: +0.11

WHAT TO WATCH: We strongly considered adding TLAB to the PI play
list this weekend. Earnings were on April 21st and the company
beat expectations. We really like the bullish breakout over its
descending trendline of lower highs and its breakout above the
50-dma. However, the stock is failing at psychological round-
number resistance at $10.00. Traders might want to look for a
dip to $9.50 and buy the bounce or wait for the move over
Friday's high at $10.02.

---

United Defense Industries - UDI - close: 34.04 change: +0.69

WHAT TO WATCH: The DFI defense index is trading near new highs
thanks for strong earnings from big players like GD. UDI turned
in a very strong earnings report too and surpassed analysts'
expectations. Now the stock is right at major resistance in the
$34.00-34.50 range. Traders can watch it for a breakout. A move
above $35.00 would produce a new triple-top breakout buy signal
on its P&F chart.

---

Polo Ralph Lauren - RL - close: 36.11 change: +0.22

WHAT TO WATCH: Retail stocks have been doing very well and the
RLX retail index closed at a new all time high on Friday.
Likewise shares of RL have been performing well the past few
months. Currently the stock is near the bottom of its rising
channel. Traders can choose to try and buy dips near $35.00 or
look for a breakout over resistance at $36.50. Earnings are
coming up in May.

-----------------------------------
RADAR SCREEN - more stocks to watch
-----------------------------------

GR $29.94 +0.05 - The narrow rising channel is nearing resistance
at $30.00. Bulls can look for a breakout but watch out for
earnings on April 29th.

DPH $10.58 +0.02 - Auto part stocks have been doing well lately.
We'd take a closer look at DPH if it can trade above $10.65.

TSM $11.25 +0.44 - TSM produced a 4.07% rally on Friday that
broke out over resistance at its 200-dma, the $11.00 mark and its
declining trendline of lower highs. This could be worth another
look.

  New Bullish Plays
  -----------------

Tupperware - TUP - close: 19.24 change: -0.28 stop: 18.50

Company Description:
Tupperware Corporation, a $1.2 billion multinational company, is
one of the world's leading direct sellers, supplying premium food
storage, preparation and serving items to consumers in more than
100 countries through its Tupperware brand. In partnership with
nearly one million independent sales consultants worldwide,
Tupperware reaches consumers through informative and entertaining
home parties; retail access points in malls and other convenient
venues; corporate and sales force Internet web sites; and
television shopping. Additionally, premium beauty and skin care
products are brought to customers through its BeautiControl brand
in North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific.
(source: company press release)

Why We Like It:
Tupperware. It's a name most of us are familiar with and the
company has customers in over 100 countries. Earlier in the
month TUP pre-announced better than expected earnings and that
sent the stock strongly higher above resistance at its 50-dma but
not enough to break resistance around the $19.50 level. Shares
consolidated those gains over the last 2 1/2 weeks until the
company announced earnings late this past week. Analysts were
expecting 21 cents and TUP delivered 25 cents per share, a 127%
jump from the same period a year ago. Granted a big boost in
profits was due to favorable exchange rates the company still
guided higher for the full year. The stock ran toward very
strong resistance at $20.00 on Friday but didn't make it.

Short-term technical traders are probably wondering why this is a
bullish play. Friday's action actually looks like a failed rally
at resistance - and it is. Its technical oscillators look very
overbought due to the rally from the March lows and some of them
are close to producing bearish sell signals. We don't argue with
any of this. That's why we're not opening this play until TUP
trades over the $20.00 mark. We're going to use a TRIGGER at
$20.05. Until TUP trades this level or above we're just
spectators. Doing so would produce a fresh triple-top breakout
on its P&F chart as well as break psychological resistance on its
daily/weekly charts.

If we are triggered we'll use a stop loss at $18.49 and target a
move to $22-24. The time frame is probably a good four to six
weeks to achieve this result so it's not the fastest moving
stock.

  New Bearish Plays
  -----------------

Freeport McMoran - FCX - close: 32.59 change: -1.48 stop: 36.50

Company Description:
Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. is a copper and gold mining
and production company. The company's principal asset is the
Grasberg mine, which contains a single gold reserve and a copper
reserve. The company's principal operating subsidiary is PT
Freeport Indonesia. PT Freeport Indonesia mines, processes and
explores for ore containing copper, gold and silver. FCX also
smelts and refines copper concentrates in Spain and markets the
refined copper products through its wholly owned subsidiary,
Atlantic Copper, S.A. In addition, PT Freeport Indonesia has a
25% interest in PT Smelting, an Indonesian company that operates
a copper smelter and refinery in Gresik, Indonesia.

Why we like it:
The prospects of rising inflation have not been received well by
the Gold and Copper markets, with both commodities having peeled
off considerably recently. FCX operates in both arenas as a gold
and copper miner. The stock was already starting to look bearish
even before last week's plunge, but last Tuesday's drop below $35
really tipped the scales in favor of the bears. The stock was
already on a PnF Sell signal from the drop below $39, but the
drop under $35 caused a triple-bottom breakdown, extending the
bearish price objective down to the $19 level, just under the
bullish support line. FCX had an amazingly strong rally through
last December, but since then the stock has been steadily losing
strength and with volume rising on the downward moves, it
certainly looks like there's more time for the bears to play.
When the stock was unable to get back over the 200-dma ($36.62)
after the initial break below that average a couple weeks ago,
the stage was set for a significant drop and Greenspan's
testimony last week provided the catalyst.

After earnings, the stock then gapped down to just above $31 and
the bulls gave their best shot at a rebound, but it clearly
failed on Friday, with the sharp drop back towards key support
near $31. That leaves the $34 level as initial resistance,
followed by strong resistance near $35-36, the site of the most
recent breakdown. Should FCX attempt another rebound next week,
a failure at either $34 or in the $35-36 area would be the ideal
entry point. On the other hand, momentum traders will get their
shot at an entry on a break below $31. We'll initially target a
drop to next support at $28, with our eye on a further drop
towards stronger support at $26. Look for further price weakness
in gold and copper to hasten the stock's drop towards that
target. We'll use an initial stop at $36.75, just over the 200-
dma, as well as what should be very strong resistance at the $36
level.

PLAY UPDATES

  --------------------
  Bullish Play Updates
  --------------------

Advance Auto Parts - AAP - close: 44.23 change: -0.10 stop: 41.00

For a day of consolidation, Friday certainly offered a bullish
performance from our AAP play. Following Thursday's strong
breakout over the top of its 4-month trading range at $43, the
stock dipped back just below $44 at the open and then steadily
advanced throughout the session, putting on a final upward burst
in the final hour to close just a few pennies below Thursday's
closing high. Certainly, there's still a solid chance of a
pullback to confirm new support in the $42.50-43.00 area before
the stock continues higher, but we can't rule out another
breakout in this developing bullish trend. That gives us two
different ways to play in terms of new entries. Aggressive
traders can target a breakout over $44.50, while those employing
a more conservative approach will want to enter on a successful
support test in the $42.50-43.00 area. Until we see more upside
action, we'll maintain our stop at $41, just under Tuesday's
intraday low and now solidly below the 10-dma ($41.91).

Picked on April 21st at $42.90
Change since picked +1.33
Earnings Date 5/19/04 (confirmed)

Urban Outfitters - URBN - close: 48.06 change: -0.04 stop: 44.00

With the strength in the broad market, URBN has been rather
stingy about offering up entry points since we initiated coverage
on Wednesday. The past couple sessions have seen intraday dips
near the $47 level, but nothing close to what should be very
strong support near $46, just under the 30-dma ($46.42). Recall
that the stock has been consistently offering up strong entry
points each time it dips into the space between the 30-dma and
the 50-dma ($45.15) in recent months, so that's the target that
patient investors should be shooting for. Those with a more
aggressive stance can certainly enter on these intraday dips near
$47, but with the understanding that there is near-term risk to a
dip towards $45. The price action over the past couple days has
URBN edging its way towards a near-term breakout over $48.50.
Note that with daily Stochastics and MACD now turning bullish,
URBN could get another upward boost next week, improving the
outlook for traders that have taken the more aggressive entry.
Maintain stops at $44.

Picked on April 21st at $47.13

Mentor Corp - MNT - close: 31.99 change: -0.51 stop: 29.99

Our bullish play in MNT has been open for one week and we don't
have much to report on. Normally that produces a caution flag in
our head. MNT has spent the last five days consolidating the
previous week's gains. That's not necessarily a bad thing but we
don't like the four-day trend of lower highs. Of course we can
also report that NNT has bounced twice from the $31.50 area,
which is encouraging since we suggested traders look for dips to
$31.50 as potential entry points. We're going to suggest caution
going forward. If the markets hold up then we can look for a
potential pre-earnings run for MNT. If the markets suddenly dip
then support at its 40-dma (30.50) could be tested. Rival IMDC
is due to announce earnings on Tuesday, April 28th and their
earnings report and guidance (if any) could have a big impact on
shares of MNT (up or down).

  Bearish Play Updates
  --------------------

Unova, Inc. - UNA - close: 19.06 change: -0.07 stop: 21.00

After drifting lower for over a week, our UNA play finally broke
down under the $19 level on Wednesday, satisfying our entry
trigger and falling almost to $18 by the end of the day. Then
along came yesterday's broad market advance, and the stock
retraced the entire drop from the day before and held that
rebound on Friday. UNA is now coming up on what should be strong
resistance at the 200-dma ($19.55), reinforced by the steeply-
sloped 10-dma ($19.76). Just above there, resistance gets even
stronger at failed support in the $20.00-20.25 area. Clearly
we're eyeing a rollover in the $19.50-20.00 area as the next
solid entry point. If that rollover fails to materialize though,
we'll be forced to conclude that last week's breakdown under $19
was a bear-trap, plain and simple. Barring anything other than a
strong rally from here, our $21 stop should be safe, as it is
above the broken ascending trendline ($20.80) and the 30-dma
($20.92).

Picked on April 14th at $20.02

  New Bullish Plays

Medarex Inc - MEDX - close: 10.50 change: +0.24 stop: 9.25

Company Description:
Medarex is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery
and development of therapeutics to treat life-threatening and
debilitating diseases. Medarex's UltiMAb Human Antibody
Development System. is a unique combination of human antibody
technologies that Medarex believes enables the rapid creation and
development of fully human antibodies to a wide range of
potential disease targets for therapeutic antibody products,
including products for the treatment of cancer, inflammation,
autoimmune and infectious diseases. Medarex's product pipeline is
based on a variety of therapeutic antibody products developed
through the use of its UltiMAb(TM) technology. Medarex creates
and develops fully human antibodies for itself and others,
offering a full range of antibody related capabilities, including
pre-clinical and clinical development supported by cGMP
manufacturing services.
(source: company press release)

Why We Like It:
The BTK biotech index looks ready to breakout above resistance in
the 555-560 region. We thought it would be a good idea to play
the sector by finding one of the leaders already on the move.
MEDX happens to fit the bill with a strong rally already
underway. The company has a handful of drugs in various stages
of clinical trials and most of the news during the last quarter
was positive. We like the stronger than average volume on the
current rally as well as the major breakout over technical and
psychological resistance at $10.00. This is a HIGH RISK play
because biotech companies always pose a risk since traders never
know when they might announce a critical success or failure for
one of their drugs being developed.

We're going to suggest that trader
s be patient and wait for a dip back towards the $10.00 level to
initiate positions even though the intraday chart looks pretty
bullish for MEDX. There is some old resistance in the $11.75-
12.00 range but we'd like to target the $13.00 level but that may
be too optimistic given that earnings are two weeks away. If we
can get a dip to $10.00 then exiting near $11.75 would still be a
nice gain. As a high risk play we're going to use a wide stop,
at least wider than we'd like, at $9.25. More conservative
players might be able to reduce this a bit and use a stop at
$9.50.

  Bearish Play Updates
  --------------------

Alvarion Ltd. - ALVR - close: 12.06 change: +0.24 stop: 13.00

Following the dip under our $11.50 entry target, ALVR has seen
just enough buying interest to keep the stock from deteriorating
further. Trading in a narrow range between $11.50-12.25 over the
past week, the stock has been working off its near-term oversold
condition, but there hasn't yet been any sign of a meaningful
rebound. Note how volume has been drying up over the past few
days, with Friday's anemic volume not even hitting a third of the
ADV. This looks like a textbook consolidation before the stock
tips over to hit new recent lows, and that means this feeble
rebound is offering a solid shot at a continuation entry. Our
preferred entry strategy all along has been to target a failed
rebound in the $12.00-12.50 area and the past several days have
offered several opportunities. Traders looking for more
confirmation before playing can wait until the stock breaks back
under the $11.40 level before playing, using increasing volume on
such a move as confirmation that the downtrend is resuming its
course. Our initial target remains a drop to the 200-dma (now at
$9.90), which gives a 2:1 reward-to-risk ratio for entries taken
near current levels. Maintain stops at $13, which is still below
the 100-dma ($12.88) and will be below the 30-dma ($13.03) by
Monday's open.

---

IMAX Corp. - IMAX - close: 5.18 change: +0.18 stop: 5.40

Is IMAX in the process of building a bottom, or is the stock
about ready to roll over? Inquiring minds want to know! This
bearish play was looking good on its way down, especially with
the solid break of the $5.00 support level, but the rebound over
the past couple sessions is a bit disconcerting. Adding to our
concern is the fact that Friday's rebound came in the midst of
fairly feeble broad market action and IMAX actually closed
fractionally over the 10-dma ($5.16), which we expected would
serve as resistance. There's really only one more potential
resistance point between here and our $5.40 stop, and that is the
$5.25-5.30 area, best seen on the hourly chart. A breakout above
that zone will almost assuredly see our stop taken out, but we're
going to stick with the play on the thinking that we could still
see a rollover and break down to new lows next week. Aggressive
traders still on the sidelines can certainly consider new entries
on a rollover from near current levels on Monday as the risk-
reward ratio is quite favorable with our target all the way down
at $4.00. But don't enter the play just because it's so close to
major resistance -- wait for the rollover.
