Asta Funding - ASFI - close: 34.20 change: +0.11 stop: 33.95

The game isn't over yet for ASFI. The stock tried to bounce today. While the bounce failed under the $35.00 level some of the technical indicators saw some improvement. We're still on the sidelines with a suggested entry point at $36.01. If ASFI trades under its simple 200-dma readers might want to consider bearish plays.

A.S.V.Inc. - ASVI - close: 20.36 change: +0.10 stop: 19.45

ASVI did not see a whole lot of improvement today. A 0.49% gain is fine but shares closed well off their highs for the session, which looks bearish. We would be careful here about initiating new plays. More conservative traders might want to tighten their stops toward $20.00. We do not want to hold over the company's earnings report in late July.

Archstone - ASN - close: 49.53 chg: -0.24 stop: 48.99 *new*

ASN continues to consolidate sideways and it's pulling the once bullish technical oscillators into bearish patterns. We're going to raise our stop loss to $48.99. More conservative traders may just want to exit early right now to protect their capital. You can always re-enter on a breakout above the $50.25 level. Our target is the $53.85-54.00.

Syneron Med. - ELOS - close: 21.16 change: +0.18 stop: 19.99

ELOS still looks bullish with its short-term trend of higher lows. The stock added 0.85% today and looks poised to breakout higher. Aggressive traders may want to go long the stock now. We're going to stick to our plan with a trigger at $21.51. If triggered our target will be the $23.85-24.00 level. We may have to adjust this target to account for the descending 50-dma, which may act as resistance.

Energy Transfer - ETP - close: 43.72 chg: -0.18 stop: 41.99

Oil stocks are still trading lower and the oil service stocks are really under performing. Fortunately, ETP is still showing relative strength with only a minor loss. We're still expecting ETP to drift toward the $43.00 level so watch for a bounce above $43.00 as a potential entry point. Our target is the $47.50-48.00 range.

Potlatch - PCH - close: 37.84 chg: -0.13 stop: 36.99

We see no changes from our previous updates on PCH. We're seriously thinking about exiting early with this play. More conservative traders may want to exit now. We're going to hold on and see if we can exit closer to the $39.00 level. The stock is churning between $39.00 and $37.15. The bad news is that shares look headed toward $37.15 right now.

Ryanair - RYAAY - close: 52.89 change: +0.68 stop: 49.95

Airline stocks were on the move today. An upgrade for JetBlue helped inspire a 1.99% gain in the XAL airline index. Shares of RYAAY added 1.3% to post their best closing high in over a month. Our goal is the $53.90-54.00 range, where we expect RYAAY to have resistance at its trendline of lower highs.

Starbucks - SBUX - close: 35.83 chg: -0.13 stop: 34.98

There are no changes from our previous updates on SBUX. Currently our strategy calls for a trigger to go long at $37.05. If triggered we'll target a rally into the $39.95-40.00 range.

Verizon Comm. - VZ - close: 32.74 change: +0.57 stop: 31.24

Traders bought the dip in VZ near $32.00 this morning and the stock bounced for a hefty 1.77% gain on above average volume. The next obstacle for the bulls is a breakout past the 100-dma near $33.00. Our target is the $34.75-35.00 range.

Short Play Updates

Avid Tech. - AVID - close: 34.45 change: -0.59 stop: 38.25*new*

AVID continues to show relative weakness with another 1.68% decline. The stock closed at new multi-year lows again. The drop under $35.00 looks like another bearish entry point but you may not want the risk since we're keeping our stop loss above the simple 50-dma. Speaking of our stop loss we're going to lower it to $38.25. Our target is the $32.50 mark.

Cntrl Vermont Pub.Srv - CV - cls: 16.11 chg: -0.51 stop: 17.65*new*

The sell-off appears to be picking up speed in CV. Shares lost another 3% on above average volume today. The stock also closed under support in the $16.50 region. We are lowering our stop loss to $17.65. Our target is the $15.50 level.

The Geo Group Inc. - GGI - cls: 33.22 chg: -1.05 stop: 35.05 *new*

Tuesday produced an interesting session for GGI. The stock started off strong and then sank lower. By the closing bell GGI had produced a bearish engulfing candlestick pattern (bearish reversal). This actually looks like a new entry point for shorts although we'd probably use a tight stop (maybe above today's high). We're going to adjust our stop loss to $35.05. Our conservative target was the $32.25 level and our aggressive target is the $30.25 level.

Juniper Networks - JNPR - close: 15.92 chg: +0.03 stop: 17.05

We remain bearish on JNPR. If 3 cents is the best oversold bounce it can produce then the bulls are in trouble. We're suggesting shorts with JNPR under $16.00. More conservative traders may want to see a new relative low under $15.65 first. Our target is the $14.10-14.00 range. We do not want to hold over the mid July earnings report. The P&F chart looks very bearish with an $8.50 target.

4 Kids Enter. - KDE - close: 15.56 change: +0.26 stop: 16.05

KDE produced an oversold bounce today to the tune of 1.69%. The bounce may not be over yet. Watch for a failed rally under $16.00 and/or its 10-dma as a new bearish entry point for shorts. Our target is the $12.60-12.50 range.

Medtronic - MDT - close: 49.75 change: +0.00 stop: 51.01

Wow! Believe it or not we're still on the sidelines with MDT. The low today was $49.50 and our trigger to short the stock is at $49.49. The breakdown under $50.00 and its 50-dma is definitely bearish so more aggressive traders may want to jump in early. Our target is the $45.50-45.00 range. We do not want to hold over the August earnings report.

Middlesex Water - MSEX - close: 16.50 change: -0.47 stop: 17.75

Our bearish play on MSEX has now been opened. The stock finally broke down under support at the $17.00 level and hit our trigger to short it at $16.90. Volume on the decline came in above average. Our target is the $15.15-15.00 range. The P&F chart points to a $12.00 target.

NitroMed - NTMD - close: 5.16 change: +0.47 stop: 5.71

Be careful here! We think NTMD started to see a technical bounce and then shares probably succumbed to some short covering and it fed on itself with a spike to $5.69. We are not suggesting new bearish positions at this time. Double-check your stop loss placement. Our target is the $3.70-3.60 range.

Blue Nile - NILE - close: 29.82 chg: +0.66 stop: 31.55

NILE is trying to bounce on us. The stock added 2.2% today but failed to close over the $30.00 level. Don't forget that NILE has a high degree of short interest and uneasy bears could panic on any sign of real strength. We might choose to exit early if NILE trades over $30.50. We're not suggesting new bearish positions. Our target is the $25.50-25.00 range.

Redback Networks - RBAK - cls: 19.41 chg: -0.26 stop: 21.01

We do not see any changes from our previous updates on RBAK. Our target is the $16.50 level. The P&F chart is bearish and points to a $12.00 target. We do not want to hold over the mid July earnings report.

Sun Hydraulics - SNHY - cls: 17.49 chg: -0.22 stop: 18.51

On your mark. Get set. SNHY lost another 1.24% and is nearing our trigger to short it at $17.45. Aggressive traders may want to open short positions here. Our target is the $15.10-15.00 range. The P&F chart looks pretty bearish with a $7.00 target.

Tellabs - TLAB - close: 14.33 change: +0.28 stop: 15.01

TLAB bounced from $13.92 and closed with a 1.99% gain, which was just enough to erase yesterday's losses. Volume came in well above the average. It sounds like there were new rumors of TLAB as a takeover target again. If a takeout does occur TLAB could gap open higher, which is our biggest risk right now! More conservative traders may not want to have short positions in TLAB at the moment. Our target is the $12.50 mark just above the simple 200-dma. We do not want to hold over the company's July earnings report.

Closed Long Plays

Watson Wyatt - WW - close: 33.75 chg: -0.65 stop: 33.80

Look out below! We've been stopped out of WW at $33.80. This is the first close under the $34.00 level in several weeks and the first significant close under its 50-dma in several months. The recent sell-off has produced a new sell signal on the weekly chart's MACD indicator. Nimble traders might just want to switch to bearish short positions right here!
