Editors Note:

The Russell posted a minor 4-point gain but it was only because time expired. The index closed 7 points below its intraday high, which was only slightly better than the 11-point intraday decline on Wednesday. The big cap indexes were even worse as the tariff headlines drone on. For the last three days the market has been mired in mediocrity with no outstanding features. Most big cap tech stocks are flat and the A/D line was almost dead flat for the day. Volume was light at 5.9 billion shares and the least since July 23rd. Investors are waiting for a headline to give the market some direction.
